Author's Note: This is just a one-shot. Honest to God! *Holds up hands* If I go into another chapter, kill me. Just strike me dead. Please…?

Very short, very sappy, and very gotta-get-this-out-of-my-system. Sorry…

Heyyyyyy…it rhymes!

Standard disclaimers apply.

COMFORT

Love…it can be a funny thing. It either makes you the happiest man alive or can just make you miserable to your dying day. Double-edge sword, as the saying goes.

Hard to find a middle ground, sometimes you never do. It's either you love her or you don't. It's either you leave her or you stay. It's either you're worthy of her or you're not.

She's so beautiful.

Kaoru…silken black hair, eyes the color of blue gemstones, the face of an angel. Innocent…bordering on naivete, untouched by blood, yet brave enough to stand up to a man feared all across Japan.

Crazy.

I chuckled.

Insane. Always jumping into the fray when her friends are threatened, when those she cares about are threatened…how could I not love her?

How can I not love what I see? The beauty, the strength, the determination, the kindness…she took all of us in, not caring about what we all were before.

I would give my life for her, because compared to her, I am nothing. Nothing at all.

She is violent, can't cook to save her life, she is insecure…but it's *her*. Without all those so-called faults, she wouldn't be the woman I love.

Megumi teases her about her "short-comings", about not being a lady, and so many times, I am tempted to tell the barb-tongued doctor that being a lady doesn't necessarily constitute having every hair in place, or being able to serve dishes fit for an emperor, or hiding modestly behind a giggle. A lady is someone who can stand up for her friends, her family, someone who can care for others without thought of payment, someone who teaches life, even when death is bearing down on her through the sharp edge of a sword.

Now I look at her as she stood on the porch of the Kamiya home, dressed in a white and silver wedding kimono, love shining from her eyes.

Ethereal. I'm not worthy of her. I never will be.

"God, I love her," I said under my breath as I waited for her to approach the shinto-altar.

Kenshin looked up at me and gave a small, sympathetic smile. "I know, Sano. I know."

"You'll take care of her, ne?" I said to Kenshin in a low voice.

"Hai, Sano. You have my word," Kenshin replied.

Kenshin won't ever break his promise. That I am certain of.

Kaoru smiled, the glow of happiness in her aura, and when her gaze settled on Kenshin, my heart said goodbye.

Jou-chan…I love you, but you love Kenshin. You're in good hands. At least, I can find comfort in that.

END

Author's Note: There! See? What did I tell you? Short, ne? That's all, really. I probably won't post this on FF.net. I'll just keep it in archive, and if I ever get myself a site, it will be on my fanfic section.

Ja! Thanks for reading!!
